There was opposition to the oath within the clergy. This created a crisis of conscience. Amongst those, the ones who took the oath were named as constitutional clergy. August 4 had nullified the rights of the popes.
Keeping all the points under consideration, Pope Pious VI condemned the civil constitution of the clergy.
